Tortuga rum cakes

Yum. Don’t the words “Tortuga” and “rum” conjure up images of Pirates of the Caribbean? Tortuga rum cakes are just the thing to get you in that Caribbean mood! They are known for being the #1 export of the Cayman Islands and a favorite Caribbean souvenir. For four years in a row, they’ve been […]

Cauliflower with nutmeg

Everywhere I go, people are talking about this delicious combination! My mother mentioned it to me first, and since then I’ve heard many references to it. I’ve come up with a couple of cooking variations so that if you’re in a big hurry you can cut some cooking time off the process. The full-blown slow […]

New varieties of cauliflower

I’ve already tried the green and the orange, but now there’s purple too! They all taste pretty much the same, but the colors can liven up your meal, and some are claiming that the colored varieties have more of certain nutrients.  I actually think that the orange one has a milder, sweeter flavor, which I […]

Passover side dishes: chicken livers and charoset

Don’t say yuck until you’ve tried them ;-)
Chopped Chicken Livers
1 lb chicken livers, drained
2 large onions, chopped
1-2 cloves of garlic, mashed
Olive oil
2 eggs, hard boiled
Salt and pepper
Saute the livers, onions, and garlic in oil until the livers are cooked completely through. Keep the heat down so that the vegetables don’t burn. Put all the […]

Roasted spring carrots

These carrots are amazing! Make sure that you choose young organic carrots, preferably with the tops still on. Do NOT use those so-called “baby” carrots for this dish! Twenty minutes from start to table is all it takes, and most of the time is in the oven so that you can be preparing whatever main […]

Chocolate chip cookies for Passover

Martha Stewart’s Cookies
Martha makes the best cookies, although some of her recipes are just too fiddly for me. This doesn’t happen to be one of the fiddly ones, though! Beautiful chocolate chip cookies that are made with matzo and matzo farfel meals. Good quality dark chocolate. Yum :-) I love this book, and I highly […]

Beef chowder - a hearty OAMC dish

Buy your beef in bulk and you can make quite a few OAMC meals from it, or at least get a few meals ready to go during your once a week food prep time. Here’s one really tasty and hearty soup that’s easy and fast to make. It uses ground beef, which you can also […]
